Once fortified, La Ferté-Bernard owned to the Haut-Maine region before the French Revolution. Avesgaud, bishop of Le Mans, created the town in building between two branches of the Huisne river a fortification in 995. Then, the town knew its most important development from 1480 and during the hole XVIth century. Indeed, Lord De Guise favoured construction and trading activities. Today, its architectural riches such as Notre-Dame des Marais church, Saint-Julien gate, the old cloth and grain market or Saint-Lyphard Chapel, are the memory of the rich past of La Ferté-Bernard.
